GSB e-Alumni Discussion Site Usage Instructions

BROWSER REQUIREMENTS
Internet Explorer 5.0 or above is required to participate in the online discussion. Netscape is incompatible, and will not properly Send the comments to the chat window, thus failing to allow participation in the discussion. However, Netscape users may log in and observe the chat without the ability to send in comments.

CHATROOM ADDRESS
The URL for the Stanford Meet2D Online Discussion is: http://www.meet2d.com/chat/stanchat.html

LOGIN TO THE CHAT ROOM. TYPE A USER NAME.
First, click in the data entry field, and then create a User Name by
typing it into the field. Click the ENTER button to enter the ongoing chat session.

TO ENTER THE DIALOG:
To chat, first click in the data entry field.
(The field is a one line yellow box located below the chat window.)
At the flashing cursor, type your message. Then click SEND.
Your words will appear in the chat window.

NOTE: Messages are meant to be short, as in a phrase or a sentence.
Keeping your messages short will better facilitate a conversation with
the other participants.

TYPING MISTAKES AND CORRECTIONS
Please ignore minor typing mistakes, as the pace of the dialog discourages taking time to perfect your typing. If you feel you need to correct something, however, you may use the arrow keys to move the text insertion point backwards in the data entry box, and you may use the backspace and delete keys to remove letters or selected words.

CLICK ON URLS:
The members of a session may direct the other participants to examine additional internet content by typing a URL address and sending it to the chat window. A URL which has been entered by the professor appears in blue text in the status box just below the yellow data entry field.

To examine the indicated URL, click on the blue text version of the URL which appears below the data entry field. When participants click on this version of a URL, a new window will open and display the contents at this web address.

To return to the ongoing chat, close the second window, thus leaving only the chat room window open.

TO WHISPER:
Click the name of the person you want to receive your private message,
Then Click WHISPER, then Click SEND.
Your message will be displayed exclusively on the screen viewed by your intended recipient, and will be invisible to all other participants.
All further messages which you type and send will be "whispered" to the chosen recipient until you click on the EVERYONE button.

You must click on the EVERYONE button to rejoin the general discussion.

USER THREAD
To see all of a person's comments collected in one place and without interruptions, click the name of the person and then Click USER THREAD.
When you are done, Click Close (bottom right).

URL REVIEW
To see a list of clickable links mentioned during the chat session,
Click URL REVIEW. When you are done, Click Close (bottom right).

MUTE / UNMUTE
Click the name of a person and then MUTE to remove the comments of that person from your chat experience. This person's comments will no longer be displayed in your chat window.

Click the name of the person and UNMUTE to restore the appearance of their comments in your chat window.

MY TEXT COLOR
To select a distinctive color for your discussion comments, use the menu of available color options to choose a personalized color.

REVIEW LOG
A complete log of the discussion will be recorded by the Technical Assistant. The complete log will be available only after the formal discussion has ended. During the discussion, periodic updates which are managed by the Technical Assistant will make portions of the log available in real time. These periodic updates must be requested by whispering your request to the Technical Assistant. The TA will then post the latest update, and participants may review the log by clicking on the REVIEW LOG link, located at the bottom of the Stanford Chat web page.

RECOVERY FROM ACCIDENTAL LOGOFF OR PROGRAM ERRORS
If the discussion window goes blank, or if you accidentally close it, then you will need to begin again. If your Explorer window is still open, but is not functioning properly, then close it. This will log you out of the chat room. If your Explorer window is closed, then open a new one and re-establish your link to the online discussion at http://www.meet2d.com/chat/stanchat.html.

Then, Login again and rejoin the discussion in progress. You may use the same or a different User Name when you login, but for continuity, we suggest you use the same user name whenever you log in.
